BE PREPARED – Proverbs 31:18b

Tuesday, December 12th, 2006

Proverbs 31:18b her candle goeth not out by night.

The ninth characteristic that Solomon was to look for in a woman he desired to marry was that she demonstrated her virtue by always being prepared. Jesus once told the story of ten virgins, five who were wise and five who were foolish. The five wise virgins took oil in their lamps and were prepared for the hour in which the bridegroom came whereas the foolish virgins were not prepared and thus were not permitted to take part in the marriage ceremony that took place that night.

Solomon was looking for a person who took the time to prepare her life to be ready for whatever God brought her way. She was not going to be caught unawares. Solomon did not want to marry a person who did not plan a head, an individual who allowed herself to get into bigger problems because she did not foresee simple delays or hindrances.

While you will never be able to anticipate every foreseeable hurdle that will be thrown into your path, by simply taking a little time in advance, one can prepare for many contingencies rather then waiting for the obvious to occur and then having to react to the situation. One can save a lot of headaches by taking the time to make preparations to ensure that they are ready for certain events in case they occur. A woman who never allowed her light to go out indicated she was ready at anytime to host a stranger who happened to pass through her community.

A person who adds virtue to their life puts on the mind of Christ. While this does not mean that all of a sudden they are able to foretell the future, and are able to change the future by always doing the right thing, it does mean that in order to redeem the time, they try to prevent as many obstacles from altering their life as possible.

You do not have to be virtuous in order to fill up your gas tank prior to setting off on a long trip. However, because you take the time to put on the mind of Christ, hopefully you will not allow yourself to demonstrate qualities of laziness by not taking certain precautions that would cause you to run out of gas halfway through your journey.

When you have virtue in your life, you will always have an answer for the hope that lies within you. Regardless of the circumstances, you will be prepared for God to use you and to allow HIS light to shine through you. Because you are ready to be prepared God will be able to use you in ways you never imagined.

You have an obligation to God to ensure that your spiritual light never goes out. You cannot hide your light under a bushel only to bring it out when you want to. Instead, the light must shine continually, ready always for God to bring people into your life to be ministered unto. Every thought, action and deed should be taken with consideration as to how it will affect your testimony for God.

Being a Christian does not mean that you are perfect. However, because you add virtue to your life, you understand that your life reflects the light of God upon this world; as such, you must take the time to ensure that you do not act foolishly and thus detract from your testimony. Be a wise servant of God by ensuring that your spiritual light never goes out, make sure that you are prepared always to be used of HIM as HE desires.

PREPARE YOUR MIND WHILE YOU WAIT FOR HIS TIMING – Acts 18:5

Friday, October 27th, 2006

Acts 18:5 And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ.

Paul had already been taking the time to preach in the synagogue every Sabbath. However, now that help had arrived in Corinth, God opened the door for Paul to go do what Paul desired to do, preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. God understood that the people in Corinth were ready to hear the truth, but he had Paul wait until help arrived.

Why God waited to press upon Paul that he could now preach the gospel is not known. However, what is known is that God’s perfect timing corresponded with Paul receiving help. It could be God did not want Paul to work on his own because God did not want Paul to become proud in how God was working through him. It could be that God knew the harvest would be abundant and that Paul could not handle the harvest on his own. Whatever the reason, God caused Paul to go through a period of waiting before HE released Paul to fulfill God’s purpose for his life.

You could imagine Paul’s prayers prior to Silas and Timothy’s arrival – Lord, it is your will that I preach the gospel, YOU have commissioned me to be your servant, it is the desire of my heart to preach the truth of YOUR Word to these individuals who are lost and bound for hell. Lord, I desire to be used of YOU. Open the door for me to preach.

Waiting is never easy, especially when you understand what God’s direction is for you. Jesus understood what HIS Father’s business was yet HE had to wait until HE was 30 years old. Waiting on God’s perfect timing is never easy but it is necessary if you really desire to please God. God’s work done in your timing will not produce the results you would have received had you waited for God’s timing.

Because Paul understood what God’s will was for his life, he was ready to proceed with God’s will as soon as God let him know the timing was right. Paul’s desire was to do the will of God and as such, he put himself in the position that he could hear the still small voice of God and instantly react. Paul had his mind upon the things of God; he was simply waiting for God to speak.

You may already understand God’s will for your life but you might be waiting for God to release you to do HIS will. If that is you, it is extremely important that you learn to add virtue to your life. You need to learn to put on the mind of Christ and to think upon those things that are pleasing to God so that when God’s timing is perfect, you will be prepared to hear and obey. Imagine a soldier who knows the battle is imminent. This solider would not be very wise if he was not spending his time preparing his mind, body and equipment.

When you find yourself waiting for God to reveal HIS perfect timing, you need to take the time to draw closer to God. Take the time to add virtue in your life. Waiting is never easy, especially when you know what God desires you to do. However, waiting gives you the opportunity to properly prepare yourself, it gives you the time to ensure that your heart and mind are right before God. Allow God to have HIS perfect work in you by waiting for HIS perfect will to be completed in HIS perfect timing. Be a good soldier by adding virtue in your life. Change your mindset to be thinking upon the things of God.
