CHILDREN ARE BLESSED – Proverbs 20:7

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Proverbs 20:7 The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

What you do will affect the lives of others. If you act as a fool, your children may be cursed. If you live your life in accordance with the will of God, then God will bless your children and your grandchildren.

Why is it that Jonathan never became king of Israel? The reason he never became king is because of the sins of his father Saul. Because Saul chose to disobey God, the kingdom was taken away from him.

Why is it that even though Rehoboam was a foolish man and the kingdom was divided that he still was able to maintain the kingdom of Judah? It is because of the integrity of his grandfather David. God loved David and because David chose to do that which was right in the eyes of God, God blessed David by maintaining the throne for many generations.

What you do will affect the lives of others. Jeroboam was the man who God gave half of the kingdom of Israel to upon the rebellion of Rehoboam. However, Jeroboam was wicked and he led the nation of Israel into great wickedness. As a result of his sin, his son became sick and died and the prophet declared that all the male progeny of Jeroboam would die miserable deaths.

Throughout scripture you see examples of how one who is deceptive causes great harm not only to their own life but also to the life of their children. Achan decided to take something that belonged to God and to keep it for himself. Not only did his sin cost the life of several Israelite soldiers, but he died and so did his sons and daughters. Korah rebelled against God and all who followed him were killed when the earth opened up swallowed them. Gehazi sinned by accepting the silver and change of garment from Naaman and as a result, both he and his family had leprosy.

When you walk in the fear of the Lord, God will bless you and your family. It does not matter where you come from, God is able to bless you. Ruth was a foreign woman, yet because of the integrity of her heart, God blessed her by allowing her to be in the line of David and ultimately the line of the Son of God. Ruth gave up her right to be married in order to do the right thing of taking care of her mother-in-law. While Ruth did not know how God was going to bless her, the blessing of God was not the reason why she did it, and God richly rewarded her and the generations to follow.

Abraham was a man who chose to obey God. Abraham forsook his home in order to do that which was pleasing in the sight of God. God blessed Abraham by giving him great wealth. God blessed Abraham by making him the father of a great nation. However, the blessings of God did not stop with Abraham. Because of the integrity of Abraham, God blessed Isaac, and Jacob. While Ishmael was not the promised child, God still blessed Ishmael and made a great nation out of him.

How can you obey God if you do not know what God desires you to do? You must spend time reading the Bible to understand how God desires you to live your life. Furthermore, you will also need to spend time in prayer to understand the specific instructions God has for you. You must spend time adding knowledge of the ways of God to your life, and you must follow HIS direction so that HE will bless you and bless your children after you.

A FRIEND – Proverbs 18:24

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Proverbs 18:24 A man that hath friends must show himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

David and Jonathan had a close friendship. Jonathan was in line to be the next king of Israel, yet he loved David so much, he was willing to give up his kingdom because he understood that David was called by God to be king. Jonathan was not concerned about his own power and prestige. On several occasions, Jonathan helped spare the life of David. Jonathan did not have to do anything, in fact, doing nothing would have been in his best interest.

During your life, you may have some pretty close friends. Friends who you can share your deepest and darkest secrets with. However, there is a Friend who desires to have a close relationship with you. HE has already acted in order to show HIS great love towards you, it is now up to you to see if you are going to show yourself friendly.

Jesus loves you so much that HE died on the cross for you. HE desires to be your friend. However, do you desire to be a friend of Jesus? Are you willing to do what it takes to accept the friendship of Jesus?

Jonathan and David should have been natural enemies. They were rivals for the exact same position. Likewise, because of our sin nature, it is not natural for us to be friends of God. Sin has created a great gap between you and God. Just as Jonathan and David ignored common sense and developed a great relationship, so too must you be willing to accept the gift of God and be willing to turn from your sinful ways so that you can have a relationship with God once again.

What does it mean to be a friend of God? Abraham was a friend of God. God did not have to tell Abraham what he was about to do to Sodom and Gomorrah but HE did. Abraham had a relationship with God that permitted him to negotiate with God over how many righteous men would have to dwell in Sodom before God would spare the entire community. Because Abraham was a friend of God, Abraham did not have just a one way conversation with God, but instead, he was able to have normal conversations.

God desires a much deeper relationship with you then you have at this time. You are only as close to God as you allow yourself to get. God has not changed, yesterday, today, or forever. God has not moved, it is sin that has caused you to move away from God. It is only as you draw closer to God that HE will draw nigh unto you.

Think of God as Mount Everest. Right now, you are a long way from Mount Everest. It is a long and difficult journey to reach the top of Mount Everest. However, it can be done and many have done it. The same is true with God, just as Mount Everest is not going anywhere, neither is God. The determination that it takes to climb the mountain should be the same determination that you put into becoming a friend of God. It might seem easier to just not climb the mountain or to draw closer to God, but the rewards of persevering are truly spectacular.

You must purpose in your heart that drawing nigh unto God is the goal of your life. Just as an individual who is about to climb Mount Everest will study the mountain, so too must you study the Word of God in order to understand the ways of God. The more you add knowledge of the ways of God to your life, the easier it will be for you to be a friend of God. God is waiting for you, are you coming?

A JUST WEIGHT IS HIS DELIGHT – Proverbs 11:1

Friday, March 14th, 2008

Proverbs 11:1 A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.

God desires that we do not cheat one another. It does not matter what you do, you must be honest in your doings. Whether you are reporting your hours at work or counting out change for a customer, you must be honest or else it is an abomination in the eyes of the Lord.

Why is it such an abomination to the Lord to be slightly dishonest with others? In Proverbs 6:17-18 we learned that a lying tongue and a witness that speaketh lies are two of seven abominations unto the Lord. One who has a false balance is one who has fixed the scales so that they do not tell the truth. Thus when a customer makes a purchase, the scales do not accurately portray to the customer the amount truly owed. One who has a false balance is one who is lying and thus it is an abomination unto the Lord.

In Acts 5, we see the story of Ananias and Saphira. They both conspired together to sell a certain possession and claim that they were giving all the money to the work of the Lord. However, they both agreed that they would keep some of the money for themselves. Ananias and Saphira wanted those around them to believe that they fully trusted God to provide for their needs, but inwardly, they insisted that they build in a safety net. However, what Ananias and Saphira conspired in secret, God revealed to the entire church and they both were instantly killed.

It was an abomination unto God for Ananias and Saphira to lie to other Christians and they lost their lives. What makes you think that you can get away with your deception? God requires honesty in all your doing. You need to treat others exactly as you desire them to treat you.

God created this world in perfect balance. What would happen if the earth were even a few hundred miles closer or farther away from the sun? God spoke this world into existence. God created a perfect world. However, it was sin that destroyed the relationship of God with man. Because of sin, God had to keep Adam and Eve out of the Garden. Because of sin, God had to destroy this earth with a flood.

God desires that you be honest with those whom HE puts into your life. When David became king, he remembered his promise to Jonathan. David sought out the son of Jonathan and he treated Mephibosheth as he treated his own sons. Jonathan was dead so no one was going to hold David accountable with his promise to Jonathan, but to David, he was going to do the right thing.

Later on in the reign of David, it became clear that Saul had sinned and as a result of that sin, the Gibeonites required the blood of seven descendants of Saul. David did not violate the sacred promise he made with Jonathan and he protected Mephibosheth.

As a Christian, you have a duty to add knowledge of the ways of God. The more time you spend understanding what is an abomination unto God, the better you will understand what you must do in order to please HIM. It is an abomination to the Lord to cheat others; you must learn to love your neighbor as yourself.

DAVID RENT HIS CLOTHES – 2 Samuel 1:11

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

2 Samuel 1:11 Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:

Shortly after the Philistines had defeated the Israelite army, a young man came to David and informed David that Saul and Jonathan were dead. David inquired into the young man’s knowledge of how he knew that Saul and Jonathan were dead and the young man admitted that he had killed Saul. This young man thought that David would reward him for killing Saul but instead, David had the young man killed.

In 1 Corinthians 13:6 we are told that love does not rejoice in iniquity. If ever there was a man who demonstrated this principle, it was David. A great injustice had just occurred to Saul that was to David’s benefit. However, David did not rejoice in the unfairness of Saul’s situation, instead, he mourned the death of Saul. It did not matter that Saul had tried to kill him on multiple occasions, David loved his enemy and he did not take revenge into his own hands even though the Lord gave him the opportunity on several occasions. David was not going to touch the Lord’s anointed.

It is important to understand that it does not matter what happens to your enemies, you still cannot rejoice in their troubles. Instead, you need to follow the example of David and mourn when trials and afflictions occur in the lives of those around you. Christ commanded you to love your enemy and that means you cannot rejoice when your enemy is facing a difficult trial.

LET NOT JONATHAN KNOW THIS – 1 Samuel 20:3

Monday, February 25th, 2008

1 Samuel 20:3 And David swore moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.

David knew that once again his life was in danger because Saul desired to kill him. When David approached Jonathan, Jonathan doubted that Saul desired to kill David. Jonathan had heard his father in the past declare that he was going to kill David so it should not have come as a surprise that his father once again was after David.

One of the traits that we admire in Jonathan is his love for David. In 1 Corinthians 13:5, we learn that love thinks no evil. In this passage, we see the love that Jonathan had for his own father. Jonathan loved his father and he did not allow himself to think that his father could commit any evil. Jonathan knew that his father had sworn that he would not harm David, and even when David approached Jonathan with the facts, Jonathan was hesitant to believe the words of his good friend David.

We need to learn to demonstrate the same loyalty and love that Jonathan demonstrated. If we are going to learn to love our neighbor as ourselves, this means that we need to stop thinking the worst of people. Instead, we need to learn to fill our minds with positive thoughts about those who God brings into our lives.

GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS – John 15:13

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Jesus paid the ultimate sacrifice when HE voluntarily allowed mankind to nail HIM to the cross so that you might have the option of confessing your sins and drawing closer to God. No one made Christ die for your sins; HE even asked HIS Father if the cup could pass from HIM. Nonetheless, Jesus loved us so much that HE gave HIS life for us.

Paul teaches us in 1 Corinthians 13:5 that love seeketh not its own. One who gives up their life so that another might prosper is demonstrating love to that individual. In this dog eat dog world that we live in today, people are constantly trying to climb to the top of the ladder by stepping all over their fellow man. However, by their actions, they are failing to love their neighbor as themselves.

Love requires sacrifice; it requires that you sacrifice your own goals and ambitions so that someone else might prosper. Jonathan loved David so much that he was willing to give up his right to be king so that David could be king. What sacrifices have you made recently for your spouse, your friends, or your neighbors? You are to love your neighbor as yourself and this means that you must put their needs above your own. Love requires sacrifice; are you ready to make the sacrifice necessary so that your neighbor see the love of God through you. How can you expect the world to see the light of God if you do not first demonstrate the love of God to them?

ASSOCIATING WITH VIRTUOUS PEOPLE – Proverbs 31:23

Sunday, December 17th, 2006

Proverbs 31:23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

Solomon was given many characteristics of virtue that he was to look for in a woman he desired to marry. In addition to the list of outward manifestations that Solomon should look for, he was also given a list of results that would occur in his life should he demonstrate wisdom by marrying a virtuous woman. The first benefit of marrying a virtuous woman was that his stature in the community would increase.

You become what you associate with. If you hang around those who are slothful, it will be hard for you to avoid eventually becoming a sluggard. If you hang around those who are diligent, then you should eventually become a more diligent individual. A virtuous individual has many quality characteristics, by associating with a virtuous person, it will change your life as you allow your life to change.

By marrying a virtuous individual, one is making a conscience decision to associate with a person who has demonstrated a higher calling to life. However, before choosing to marry a virtuous individual, one should first examine their own life to see if God has developed the same qualities in their life. As the two become one and unite in a common vision, they will place themselves in a position where God can use them in ways that they never expected.

Whether you are looking for a spouse or looking for a friend, the success of such relationship will depend upon the similarities and quality of each individual’s relationship with the Lord. One can always continue to develop character, but one should not be looking for others to develop character that they themselves have not demonstrated.

It is important to realize that just because you are virtuous and associate with virtuous individuals, it does not mean you will rise to greatness. Jonathan and David had kindred spirit but both of them could not each be the next king of Israel. Jonathan understood this and although he technically should be the next king of Israel, Jonathan understood God’s will and thus was willing to work to make David great. Jonathan understand that his relationship with David meant that he would not be great, but he also understood that his relationship with David enabled David to be all that God desired him to be.

You do not always associate with virtuous people because of the impact that it can have on your own personal life. Sometimes, you must associate with virtuous people to help them be all that they could be. The virtuous woman that is referenced in this passage does not sit in the city gates but he joy and satisfaction come from understanding that she helped her husband succeed just as Jonathan saw David succeed.

You are supposed to add virtue to your life. You should also associate with those who demonstrate that they have virtue in their life. This association may strengthen you and enable you to do things that you never thought possible. However, this association may also be designed so that you can help someone else do more for God. No matter which position God has for you in each relationship, you have the joy of knowing that God used you to reach more people then you would have reached on your own.

DO GOOD NOT EVIL TO THOSE AROUND YOU – Proverbs 31:12

Tuesday, December 5th, 2006

Proverbs 31:12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

The second characteristic of virtue that Solomon had been instructed to look for in a wife is the characteristic of goodness. Solomon was instructed that he was to look for a wife who looked to do good things for him and not evil. This seems like a rather basic concept in that one should marry an individual who does not treat you wrongly. Nonetheless, throughout the world today, there are many individuals who allow the falling in love experience to cloud their judgment causing them to overlook major character flaws.

A person who has added virtue to their life has put the things of God first. Because God is first in their life, one of the outward manifestations of the inward change that has occurred will be how the person treats others. Solomon was instructed to look for a wife who would treat him with goodness. In order to do this, he would have to look at how this young lady treated those around her in order to determine how she would treat him. By first looking at how she treated those around her, he would have a better idea of her inward character which would be necessary for a solid marriage.

Remember, demonstrating goodness is not a quality that must only be demonstrated to your spouse or your future spouse. Demonstrating goodness should be shown to everyone. When you add virtue to your life, you understand that the things of God are first in your life. God desires that you abstain from evil and seek to do good. Thus as your relationship with God grows, it will be natural that you demonstrate goodness to all those around you. It is your obligation to God to ensure that you life properly reflects HIS goodness and as such, you are a testimony to the world for HIM.

David and Jonathan were great friends. Jonathan understood that God had called David to become the next king of Israel and Jonathan did not wish for any evil to come upon David. Jonathan took care of David and long after Jonathan’s death, David took care of Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth. After the death of Saul and Jonathan, God brought a famine in the land because of Saul’s sin in killing the Gibeonites. The Gibeonites demanded seven of Saul’s decedents be killed. David did not want to do Jonathan any evil and as such, he ensured that Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth was not turned over to the Gibeonites. David and Jonathan each sought to do good for the other regardless of the personal cost.

You have a sin nature and because of that sin nature, it is often easier to do evil then it is to do good. However, as a child of God, it is your duty to live your life so that HE is glorified. As such, the outward manifestation of your life should demonstrate to the world that inwardly you are living your life according to the principles of God’s word.

When you are seeking a spouse is not the only time for you to demonstrate virtue in your life by doing good and not evil. Solomon was instructed to look for virtue first so as to benefit all the days of his life. Regardless if you are married or single, you should treat others with goodness and not evil. If you desire to have a good relationship with a friend or a spouse, then you must first demonstrate to others that you have virtue in your life. How can you expect to demand that others demonstrate virtue for your benefit if you are not willing to demonstrate virtue for their benefit?

VIRTUE REQUIRES THAT YOU BE TRUSTWORTHY – Proverbs 31:11

Monday, December 4th, 2006

Proverbs 31:11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

What are some of the inner qualities of virtue? The very first one that is mentioned in this list of qualities is trust. Webster’s 1828 dictionary defines trust as “Confidence, a reliance or resting of the mind on the integrity, veracity, justice, friendship or other sound principle of another person.” Solomon was advised from his youth that when he chose a spouse, he must choose a spouse who he could trust. If he did not have confidence in her integrity, then how could he expect to have an oneness of spirit with his wife?

Marriage is the bringing of two separate individuals together to become one in the sight of God. If that relationship starts out with two individuals who cannot trust the other then that relationship will be extremely shaky and eventually, if there is no fear of God involved, the relationship will crumble as the parties seek their own pleasure elsewhere.

You have an obligation to God to add virtue to your life which means that you must live your life in a trustworthy manner. This means that others can look at you and see that you are a man or woman of integrity. If you say that you are going to do something, regardless of the consequences to your own life, you follow through. It should be obvious to those around you that if they share something with you in confidence that you will not be the person who is sharing it in the local gossip chain.

Every close friendship must be built upon trust. David and Jonathan trusted each other. Even though Saul desired to kill David, David trusted Jonathan to discover the truth of the matter and relay that information to him. David did not worry about Jonathan betraying him or setting up an ambush whereby he might be trapped and killed by Saul.

Whether you are seeking a spouse or desire to have a close friend, one of the things that you must look for in the relationship is your ability to trust the other person. If there is no trust, then the relationship will never deepen. You cannot control whether someone is trustworthy, but you can control whether you are trustworthy. Whether you add virtue to your life is up to you.

When soldiers fight, they must be able to trust that their fellow soldiers are going to hold their ground. An army is only as strong as its weakest link. A relationship is also only as strong as each party is able to trust the other individual. If there is even a shade of doubt, that relationship will slowly begin to crumble.

It is your duty to add virtue to your own life so that when others look at you they can trust you. You cannot expect to have a great relationship with either a friend or a spouse if they are trustworthy but you lack virtue and are not a trustworthy individual. You are accountable to God for your actions, and as you remain faithful to HIM, HE will be able to bless you in your friendships in ways you never imagined.

A friendship or a marital relationship where both parties can trust each other is extremely valuable. If God has blessed you with such a relationship, thank HIM for it and strive to work together to draw closer to HIM. If God has not blessed you with such a friendship, then it is your duty to change your life and seek for those who have done the same.

YOU MUST LOOK FOR THOSE WHO HAVE OBTAINED VIRTUE – Proverbs 31:10

Sunday, December 3rd, 2006

Proverbs 31:10 Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.

The Hebrew word for virtuous found in this passage has a similar meaning to the Greek word for virtue that is found in 2 Peter 1:5. According to Strongs, the definition of virtue as found in 2 Peter is virtue, manliness (valor), excellence, and praise. According to Strongs, the definition of virtue as used in Proverbs is virtue, valor, strength and valiant. However, the word is also used in the Hebrew to mean a force, war, an army, power, riches and substance.

In this passage, you see a list of items that a man should be looking for in his wife. You are told that a woman who demonstrates that she has virtue in her life is extremely valuable. It is debated among scholars who actually wrote this passage but one of the more credible explanations is that these were the words of Bath-sheba to her son giving him guidance in looking for his wife.

Bath-sheba desired that her son have high standards in what he looked for in his spouse. Bath-sheba did not have her son look at outward beauty but instead desired that he look for the outward manifestation of inward character. She was very wise in guiding her son’s attention to different aspects of a future wives life that would clue him in on whether or not she had the inner character that would help assist in a long and prosperous relationship. Bath-sheba likened the finding of a virtuous woman to a ruby. Yes, rubies could be found, but it took the searcher time and effort to find the valuable gem.

By its very definition, virtue is not a quality that can only be found in women. Virtue is a quality that must be found in both men and women. In fact, in the Old Testament, the Hebrew word that is interpreted virtue is used 242 times and most of the time, it is used in its more masculine form. However, what you do learn from this passage is that not everyone automatically has virtue. You also learn that an individual who has obtained virtue is a person of great value.

A young man who is looking for a spouse is instructed to find a woman who has great character. When both the husband and wife have demonstrated that they have applied their heart and mind to the things of God, the ability of God to use this couple will be greatly increased because of the unifying of vision of the married couple.

Solomon tells us about a friend that sticks closer then a brother. This could be like the relationship David and Jonathan enjoyed. Jonathan and David’s hearts were bound to one another in a deep friendship because they saw in one another an inward character that was extremely valuable. Jonathan was a great man of war as was David, but Jonathan was willing to allow David to take the throne even though everyone thought he was entitled to it. The character of these men made the friendship sweet.

You may not be looking for a spouse and thus you might think that this Proverb is inapplicable to you. Nonetheless, you do have a choice in whom you develop close friendships with. Just as a young man is to seek after a woman who has demonstrated great character, so too must you look for close friends among those who have demonstrated they have added virtue to their lives for these are truly valuable friends.

GOD’S PERFECT TIMING WILL NOT REQUIRE YOU TO DO WRONG – 1 Samuel 24:4

Thursday, August 17th, 2006

I Samuel 24:4 And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the Lord said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe privily.

Samuel had anointed David king. David knew what God’s purpose for his life was. David even had a promise from God that God would deliver his enemies into his hands. Saul was pursuing after David attempting to kill him. However, as Saul was attempting to kill David, he put himself in a position whereby David could have actually killed him instead. David could have killed Saul and taken over the throne by killing the one person who was stopping him from ascending to his God given calling.

If David had yielded to the temptation and killed Saul in the cave when he had a chance, then there would have been great confusion throughout the country as some would have followed Jonathan and other’s David. The fact that Jonathan and David were good friends would not have mattered; it would have put them in a position where they were enemies.

Nonetheless, David understood that it was not his job to take matters into his own hands. It was not his job to hurry up and obtain the will of God in his own timing. David understood that Saul was also anointed king and that until the Lord removed Saul from the throne, Saul was the rightful king regardless of what anointing he had received. By killing Saul one could simply say that he was fulfilling God’s will and opening the door for God to make him king. By faith David was going to wait for God’s perfect timing to see God’s fulfillment of God’s perfect will. David was not going to take matters into his own hands even if it all appeared by circumstances to be in accordance with God’s will.

God’s perfect timing will never require that you break HIS perfect law. God’s perfect timing will never cause you to take matters into your own hands to help God out. God does not need your help in bringing HIS perfect will into your life. David understood that it was important not to live his life only by circumstances but that he also needed to understand the law of God. David had a personal word from the Lord and circumstances in his favor, but these two added up, still did not give him the right to kill the Lord’s anointed even thou Saul was trying to kill him. Two wrongs do not make a right.

It is vital that you learn to understand the ways of God in order to protect yourself from doing the Lord’s will in your own timing. Just because you know what God has instructed you to do and just because the circumstances are right at this time for God’s will to be fulfilled, it does not mean that this is the perfect timing for God’s will to be fulfilled. God’s work done in God’s timing will not lack God’s resources. God’s perfect timing will not require you to twist things into place in order for them to happen.

By faith you must demonstrate patience like David and wait for God’s perfect timing to fulfill HIS promises for your life. By faith you will not take matters into your own hand and make things occur so that God’s promises are now fulfilled. Instead, it is important that you allow God to remove all the obstacles that prevent HIS perfect will from occurring in your life. When you allow God’s perfect timing to God’s perfect will, the world will see God working through you in a way that they never would have otherwise.

BY FAITH YOU WILL TAKE THE FIRST STEP TO FIGHT THE ENEMIES OF GOD – Hebrews 11:34d

Sunday, October 23rd, 2005

Hebrews 11:34d waxed valiant in fight, turned to fight the armies of the aliens.

An illustration of one demonstrating their faith in fighting is Jonathan. Israel was at war with the Philistines. Jonathan decided to fight so he took his armorbearer and went to the garrison of the Philistines. He told his armorbearer that they were going to make themselves seen by the Philistines and if they asked them to come up to the garrison that God was with them. Jonathan recognized that God could save by many or just a few. He was willing for God to use him in delivering Israel from the hands of the Philistines.

Jonathan made a choice to fight the Philistines. He was not afraid of battle but was willing to be used of God. Jonathan demonstrated his faith by intentionally putting himself in the place where God had to use him. Jonathan knew that the Philistines were enemies of God and must be destroyed. Jonathan simply saw what needed to be done and allowed God to work through him.

Jonathan could not take on the entire Philistine army at one time, but he did pick one garrison and asked God to deliver this one enemy into his hands. Because he was faithful in this fight, the Philistines feared and Israel’s heart was strengthen and a great victory was wrought that day.

God does not require you to take on a garrison of Philistines. However, you can demonstrate your faith by making a conscience decision to fight the enemies of God. Do not be worried about all the enemies. Instead, simply focus on one enemy and ask God to give you the ability to destroy that one enemy. Whatever enemy God gives you to fight, fight with all your might knowing that God is there to help you. The enemy will always outnumber you. However, with God on your side, those who are with you are greater then those who are with them.

Do not worry about how you are outnumbered. Instead, simply trust in God and allow HIM to demonstrate HIS power through your life. While the Israelites gave credit to Jonathan for the entire victory, Jonathan and his armorbearer only killed 20 men. Jonathan knew that it was God who went before him to fight.

Ask a young child to clean up their room and they will probably reply that they do not know where to start. The more they complain about how impossible the job is, the longer it will take them until they are free to do what they want. However, if that child learns to just simply start with the first item, the child will see progress and quickly work to finish the task before them.

There are many battles out there for you to fight. In fact, there are probably too many battles out there for you to fight on your own. However, if you are willing to allow God to work through you, you can do many great things for God. Simply choose the battle God has for you. Locate yourself in the place where God can use you. Allow God to work through you and watch how HE takes care of you and allows you to win many victories for HIM. By faith you must step forth and fight the enemies knowing that HE will take care of you. Do not wait until God decides to use you, but instead be proactive and demand that God use you to destroy those who fight against HIM.
