Psalms 39:7 – MY HOPE IS IN THEE
Psalms 39:7 And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.
We know that David had a heart after God’s own heart. In this passage, David properly describes the attitude that we all should have when it comes to waiting on the Lord. Our hope should be in the Lord and we should understand that God will bring about HIS perfect will in HIS perfect timing. If our hope is in God, our heart should not be longing for anything.
After Sarah had died, Abraham sent his servant to go find a wife for Isaac. We do not know whether Abraham told Isaac that the servant was going to find a wife for him, but it would probably be safe to assume that Isaac knew what his father was doing. Isaac had lost his mother when he was 37. Isaac missed his mother and God used his marriage to Rebekah to comfort Isaac.
Isaac could have taken his sorrow and used it to drive his desire for a wife. Isaac could have been going to the local towns looking for a beautiful woman in which to marry. Isaac could have gone out to the field to look for the return of the servant waiting for his bride to return. However, Isaac had his hope in the Lord and Isaac went out to the field to meditate. Isaac had his focus upon the things of God and it was as he was focusing upon the things of God that God brought to him his helpmate.
How many hours a day do we spend wishing for something that we desire to have? Maybe we desire a new car, or a new house, or a new job. However, it is important to understand that it is not necessarily the desires of heart that should be important to us. What should be most important to us is our relationship with God. Do we take time to get away from the things of this world in order to hear the voice of God? Do we focus upon the things God desires us to focus upon?
Isaac did not need to be worried about when he would be married because his hope was in the Lord. God knew exactly where his wife was and God knew what needed to happen. By taking his evenings and meditating upon the things of God, Isaac demonstrates the proper way to wait on the Lord.
It is easy to become so focused upon the things of this world that you lose sight of the things of God. You may say that you are being faithful in pursuing the things of God over the things of the world but if we were to weigh the time you spend thinking about the things of God and the time you spend thinking about the things you desire, it is very unlikely that you spend more time with the things of God.
If your hope is going to be in the Lord, you need to spend ample time with the Lord each day. This does not mean that you spend five minutes every night just reading a chapter from scripture before going to bed. You need to spend time with the Lord seeking out what HE desires you to do.
When you hear the word patience, it sounds like a terrible thing, like waiting at a stop light when you want to be driving to your next destination. However, patience is a gift from God, these periods of waiting are designed by God for you to take your mind off of what you desire and to put your mind upon the things of God. When you think things are not going your way, rather than spend more time thinking about what you want, spend more time thinking about God.
