Psalms 25:5 – WAIT ALL THE DAY
Psalms 25:5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.
What does it mean to wait on the Lord all day? Does it mean that you are a waiter or waitress and all you do is run around and do what the Lord wants you to do all day? Does it mean that you are supposed to be sitting at home on your couch all day waiting for the Lord to give you the desires of your heart?
While it is good that you do the perfect will of God all day, this is not what this verse is talking about. While it is important to spend time in prayer and reading the Bible, scripture also teaches that if a man does not provide for his family, he is a worthless man. As such, God is not telling us in this passage that we are supposed to do nothing until the Lord provides us the desires of our heart.
David is a man after God’s own heart. David was told that one day he would become king. However, just because David would one day become king, that did not mean that he went into the palace and insisted that he become king immediately. David had many opportunities to kill Saul and he refused because he understood he did not have the right to touch the life of the Lord’s anointed.
Many unfair things happened to David while he was waiting for the Lord to make him king of Israel. David made sure he spent plenty of time drawing closer to God and understanding HIS perfect will. David did not blame God when bad thing occurred because he understood that his duty was to serve the Lord and it was up to the Lord what the results of David’s life would be.
This verse is similar to the scripture that we are to pray without ceasing. Many people have wondered how you pray 24 hours a day. So likewise, what does it mean to wait all day on the Lord? While the concept may sound difficult, it is important to understand that in the same way that we need to be in an attitude of prayer, so also, we need to be in an attitude of waiting on the Lord. This means that we do not put wicked things before our eyes that destroys our relationship with God. This means that we do not put wicked things before our ears that destroys our ability to hear the voice of God.
When we see, hear, or speak things that are not pleasing to God, we have to spend our time renewing our relationship with God rather than continuing to hear us. Pretend you were on the telephone talking with God. You spent one hour on hold before God started talking with you. However, God starts speaking and you decide to hang up the phone. In order to renew the connection with God, you would have to spend another hour on hold. It would be much easier to just not hang up the phone to begin with then go through the hassle of being on hold again.
Not that God requires you to wait an hour if you cry out to HIM. However, when we sin, our sin destroys the communication we have with God. We must confess our sins in order to restore that which we had before. We are much better of never destroying the connection we had with God.
If you are going to wait on the Lord all day, this means that you must learn to bridle sin nature in order to do the things of God. You must be patient and not allow the things of this world drive your decision. Serving God with every decision is not easy, but there are great rewards for those who learn to trust in God and put HIM first in their life.
