Ephesians 6:5-6 – DOING THE WILL OF GOD FROM THE HEART
Ephesians 6:5-6 Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; Not with eye service, as men pleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;
Christ commanded us that we are to rendered to Caesar the things that are Caesar and to God the things that are God. In this passage, we learn that a part of our testimony of the power of God in our life is revealed by our ability to submit to those who are in authority over us.
Just because you do not call yourself a servant, does not mean that this verse does not apply to you. When you have chosen to go to work for another, you have an obligation to obey those who are writing your paychecks. Your boss is not paying your paycheck because he desires to run a charity in your honor.
God desires that your life reflect the light of God even in the workplace. This means that you should be living your life in such a manner that when your boss looks at you, he or she knows that you are not like everyone else. When you are at work, you should not be wasting your time viewing personal things on the internet. When you are at work, you should not be wasting your time with idle chatter at the water cooler. When you are at work, you should not be looking for another job from another employer.
God desires that you have a singleness of purpose when you are at work. Your purpose at work is to be as effective as you possibly can be for your boss. Do not allow the things of this world to distract you from rendering to Caesar the things that are Caesar. Just because everyone else waste 3 hours a day playing around on unrelated internet searches, it does not mean that you can destroy your testimony by being the same.
If God has opened the door for you to work for a non-Christian, you must understand that your work behavior may be the only testimony that your boss will ever see of Christ. If you have proclaimed that you are a Christian, and you are not the best employee your boss has, think about how you are damaging the name of Christ by calling yourself a Christian? Christianity is more than just a title; the world should look at you and know that there is something different.
Your life is a testimony; if the work product that you produce is the same as everyone else, why should your boss be willing to repent and be saved? Your boss knows that he pays for over three hours of wasted time every day as his employees do what is right in their own eyes. The boss knows that his employees are stealing from him, but he understands that this is the cost of doing business. However, when you are a Christian and you also are stealing from him; why should he think that you have anything different that he should desire?
Your life is a testimony and your boss is one of the people who is scrutinizing your life. You must understand that your testimony is one of the most powerful things that you have to reach those at the workplace.
You need to add temperance to your life so that you can say no to the temptations to be an average worker. You need to demonstrate self-control and be willing to refrain from simply paying lip service to your boss by claiming to be working when your work production is not any different than anyone else. Your life is a testimony at work and if you are not living your life in a manner pleasing to God; why should you expect your unsaved boss to accept Christ.
