HOPETH ALL THINGS – 1 Corinthians 13:7

1 Corinthians 13:7 hopeth all things,

Love trusts. The word hope used in this passage means to expect or confide, hope for, and to trust. If you love someone, it means that you can confide in them and you trust that they will not violate that trust. In Proverbs 31, we are told that one of the traits of a virtuous woman is that the heart of her husband safely trusts in her.

When a man and woman are joined together in marriage, the two become one. However, how can they become one if they cannot confide in one another? How can they really become one if they do not trust each other? If the wife is worried that her husband might commit adultery, how can she really love her husband? If the husband is worried about how much money the wife is spending, how can he really love her?

Love is built upon a relationship of trust. Because of sin, a husband and wife might do something to harm the relationship. However, perfect love by the grace of God will find a way to forgive and learn to trust once again. Love is a decision. After someone has wronged you, you must choose to trust them again. After someone has violated your ability to trust, your natural reaction will be not to trust. You must choose to love regardless of what the circumstances are. You must choose to allow God to open the door to mend fences that do not appear like they can be mended.
